Cast iron chamber gauges are the best way to check your rifle chamber for safety. Forster headspace gauges are considered the standard by which all others are judged, due to their attention to detail, precision, durability and reliability. These gauges are recognizable world-wide as the standard bearers for rifle chamber checks. It is generally agreed that the Forster gauges are the best on the market today. These cast iron gauges feature a very heavy “hammer-block” type case which allows the gauges to withstand far more abuse than their cast-steel counterparts. A ‘strap-off’ method is used to clamp the gauge to the barrel, then draw the gauge across the top of the receiver and measure the actual distance i.e. clearance between the gun and the gauge. A safety pin is inserted to pre-set minimum clearance i.e. the gauge will not over-travel i.e. not “over-head’ the gun chamber chamfer. For concentricity, gauges with a rimless chamber like the Forster Rimless Gage are run through a “pull-back” technique. This allows the gauge to be ‘seated’ into the chamber firmly yet accurately. A special nose-guard is attached to the chamber to eliminate ‘cross talk” between the gauge and the receiver. A ‘pattern’ is printed on the back of the gauge which allows for consistent results.
